Malak ElBatran is a special educational needs specialist with an undergraduate background in psychology and MA in Special and Inclusive Education from UCL. Malak worked for the department of educational support services at the Learning Resource Center (LRC) with children with learning challenges across different age groups. She has also conducted a 40-hours workshop on how to become a support teacher for children with Down Syndrome as well as having completed an introductory course in DIRFloortime therapy. Fueled by the internal fulfillment that arises from supporting children when faced with their difficulties, she decided to pursue this career. Along the way, she has been exposed to various contexts in which inclusion may be achieved. She has also personally witnessed the positive impact of facilitating education when needed. As a result, and with the efforts of staff members, shadow teachers, and parents, Malak took a step forward towards including children with special educational needs and disabilities in a national language school in Egypt. As a matter of fact, her inspiration comes from the collective nature of this field; in which it is utterly important for stakeholders to come together to support individuals in need of support. That is where the idea for Kollena began. It is from simple questions such as “Who is a good therapist?” or “Where can I get a diagnosis?” that she understood the need for a source that offers answers. Therefore, Malak and Nazli El Leithy decided to combine all service providers that are able to support individuals with special needs amongst several fields in one professional platform. Her aim is to pave the way for parents who are raising children with abilities that are different to what our society has always known.
